There's nothing more relaxing than enjoying a wine tasting in the surrounds of a beautiful vineyard on a warm afternoon. The Margaret River region is a stunning backdrop to do just that. But there's nothing more frustrating than turning up to a cellar door and finding out they use animal products in their wine. To avoid having to ask the controversial question, here is a list of totally vegan friendly wineries in the Margaret River region. I've even put them into a little itinerary for you. It's even easy to follow for passengers navigating (even after a couple of glasses of wine). You're welcome.

I am by no means a wine connoisseur - actually far from it! But I do like to visit vineyards and learn more about this nectar of the gods. When visiting the Margaret River Region earlier this year I should have done my research. I mean, my non-vegan friends were happy enough to have a self proclaimed designated driver, but it loses the fun when not everyone can participate. So if I had my time over again, this is the itinerary I would go with. Some vineyards have a few vegan options on the tasting list, however, the wineries I've chosen in this loop are all 100% vegan friendly!

This loop starts and ends in the Margaret River township and I would follow the clockwise direction. Start with a lunch (either in town or at a vineyard according to your budget) before enjoying some good wine. Either visit them all or just a few - it's up to you!

Cellar Door: Open from 10:00am to 5:00pm 7 days a week

Restaurant: Open from 12:00pm 7 days a week (reservations recommended)

This stunning winery is my pick for having a leisurely lunch in beautiful surrounds. The food is inspired by all things local with ingredients sourced from local producers, neighbouring farms and those grown in the vegetable garden onsite. The menu is elegant yet humble with a vegan main on offer and several sides. The waitstaff were very efficient and knowledgable about vegan food and wines.

Cellar Door: Open from 10:00am to 4:30pm 7 days a week

Restaurant: Open from 11:30am to 4:00pm Fri to Tue (reservations recommended)

Wine and food experience ($200) must be booked in advance and vegan is available

My friend had just attended a wedding here and really enjoyed the food and wine. They have an interesting philosophy - biodynamic, the next step above organic. It's essentially about the relationship between the cosmos, the soil and the plants. They use cow manure on the vines, here so if you avoid if that is a problem for you. They are dedicated to sustainability with being carbon neutral and recycling. A self-guided tour through the Spiral Garden is a fun way to learn more about the philosophies behind this vineyard.

Cellar Door: Open from 10:00am to 5:00pm 7 days a week

This winery is one of the first 5 vineyards planted in the area so it has a lot of history behind it! With two vine locations, Woodlands and Woodlands Brook, they were originally planted to emulate wines found in the Bordeaux region. This family run establishment specialises in Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet blends so if red wine is your thing, then this is the place for you!

Cellar Door: Open from 10:00am to 5:00pm 7 days a week

Restaurant: Open from 11:00am to 4:00pm Wed to Mon (reservations recommended)

Amelia Park was launched in 2009 so is relatively new on the scene. However, this vineyard is known for making consistently outstanding wines. Expect classic Margaret River varieties of Semillon Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Cabernet Merlot. The restaurant is not the most vegan friendly (no mains are vegan) but if you had to you could put together a good meal from the sides with a few tweaks here and there.

Cellar Door: Open from 10:00am to 5:00pm 7 days a week

This is another family owned and operated winery that has been running for over 40 years. They have a heavy focus on sustainable vineyard practices. All grapes are grown on the estate and handpicked. Ashbrook also have their own facilities for processing, winemaking, bottling and packaging so you know they have the skills and knowledge to back it up. A huge range of wine varieties are on offer and they come with screw tops - great for takeaways!

As more winemakers experiment with vegan-friendly methods, I would hope to see this list increase. Enjoy responsibly and let me know if you try this itinerary!

Cheers,

Rachelle
